In year 1, the children continue their learning in a similar way to the Early Years. Experiences are play based, and children will be involved in group work led by an adult. As the year progresses, we develop the organisation to include group guided work and independent work. Topic work is still important and classes work on literacy and maths that are interactive and fun. In maths, children weigh ingredients to cook, so they put their learning into real contexts. They write for a purpose in literacy, and learn how to read through daily phonics work. Highly trained adults ensure that children’s speaking and listening are developed well, and if any children are experiencing problems, they are given support to overcome these.
Children experience topics including ‘Toys’, ‘The Seaside’ and ‘Houses and Homes’. They begin with exciting visits or visitors and drama sessions. This is to try to capture children’s imagination and interests from the start of the topic. Often, literacy and maths will be linked to the topic to put learning into real contexts for the children.
In Year 1 we deliver bespoke phonics sessions, based on the governments national letters and sound programme, using materials and activities we know through experience have a positive impact for our pupils.
